Xylazine 10%

Injectable solution

 

Formula:

Xylazine HCl                    11.65 (equivalent to 10 g of Base Xylazine)

Excipients q.s.ad.            100 mL

 

Indications:
The Xylazine is indicated to induce sedation in the equine, with a short period of analgesia and as a pre-anesthetic before local or general anesthesia.

Uses: Diagnostic procedures, orthopedic, dental, in minor surgery of short duration, sedative during the post-surgical period, to facilitate the handling of irascible animals. As pre-anesthetic when it is use sodium pentobarbital, thiopental sodium, thiamylal sodium, nitrous oxide, halothane or methoxyflurane.

 

Route of administration:
Intramuscular or intravenous, with asepsis measures corresponding to the application of injectable.

 

Dosage:
Each mL of Xilamic contains 100 mg of Xylazine base.

Intravenous route: 0.5 mL of Xylamic every 50 kg of weight (1.1 mg Xylazine / kg body weight).

Intramuscular route: 1 mL of Xylamic every 50 kg of weight (2.2 mg of Xylazine / kg of weight).

After its administration, the animal should be allowed to rest in a calm environment until full effect. The indicated doses provide a sedation effect for approximately 1 – 2 hours and analgesia for about 15 – 30 minutes.

 

When it is used as a pre-anesthetic in general anesthesia, it is usually sufficient to reach the surgical anesthetic plane the use of 1/3 to ½ of the calculated total dose of barbiturates administered to that effect.

 

Contraindications and adverse effects:

It is contraindicated in animals medicated with epinephrine and in animals with ventricular arrhythmias. It is not recommended its use during the last trimester of the gestation.

Use with caution in case of: cardiac dysfunction, hypotension or shock, respiratory dysfunction, severe renal or hepatic insufficiency, convulsive disorders or severe weakness. Also in horses with laminitis in the vasoconstriction phase because its administration decreases the digital blood flow for approximately 8 hours after its injection.

 

Warnings:

Treated equines can be excited and kicked because different stimulation, especially auditory, be cautious in the handling of these animals. Avoid intra-arterial injection that can cause seizures and collapse.
