Formula:
Each tablet contains
Prednisolone base 20.0 mg
Excipients q.s.ad. 1 tablet
Indications:
PREDNISOLONE TABLETS MICROSULES contains a powerful corticosteroid, with predominantly glucocorticoid activity, indicated as adjunctive treatment for arthritis, chronic respiratory diseases, leaver diseases, allergic dermatosis, oncological processes, autoimmune processes such as pemphigus and other inflammatory processes in cats and dogs.
Route of administration and dosage:
Oral: It is recommended a dosage of 1 – 2 mg/kg for cats, and 0,5 – 1 mg/kg for dogs, once or twice a day.
Dosage must be indicated for each patient according to severity of signs, treatment duration intended and the tolerance of the patient to the possibility of excess. In severe cases, lowest dose should be used in order to help to improve the condition and the treatment must not be abruptly interrupted. In cases were high doses are necessary, make proper follow up of the patient in case that appear side effects such as polydipsia and polyuria, and reduce the dose or discontinue the treatment.
It is important that the professional know that when the product is administered once a day, if possible, should be between 22 and 24 hrs in cats, and between 7 and 10 in the morning in dogs, to not interfere with hormonal biological rhythm.
Guidance dose:
*Antiinflamatory or antiallergic use: dogs 0,5 – 1 mg/kg and 1 – 2 mg/kg in cats every 12 or 24 hours, in prolonged therapies gradually reduce the dose and administrate every 48 hours.
Equivalent in dogs ¼ – ½ Tablet every10kg and in cats ¼ – ½ tablet every 5kgs
*Immunosuppressant use: 2,2 – 3,3 mg/kg/day during two days and then 2 – 4 mg/kg administered every 48 hours.
Equivalent 1 – 11/2 tablet./10 kg during two days and then 1 – 2 tablet/10 kg every 48 hours.
Gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis 1 – 2 mg/kg/day/7 – 10 days, gradually reduce the dose in the next 2 – 3 weeks until reaching a minimun dose that controls the signs.
*Replacement therapy: 0,1 a 0,2 mg/kg/day.
Precautions:
Use with caution in case of infectious diseases, scabies, gastrointestinal ulcers, mellitus diabetes, glaucoma, kidney or liver failure. Its use is not recommended in case of systemic fungal infections. High doses for prolonged periods may result in lowering of adrenocortical function and may determine adrenal atrophy. In dogs, polydipsia, polyuria and polyphagia were seen also in short treatments or with alternating days (every 48 hours) of dosage. Adverse effects are generally associated with long term treatments specially with high doses or daily doses. They are rare in antiinflamatory therapies. The signes are similar to those of hyperadrenocorticism. These effects are more common and severe in immunosuppressive therapies. In patients who were supplied with amphotericin B or diuretics that mobilize K, hypokalemia can occur. Administered with digitalis glycosides it increases the possibility of digitalis toxicity. Insulin requirements may be increased when there is a glucocorticoid therapy.
